See My Ability, Not My Disability
Building a n inclusive, healthier future
Manguzi Gijima started out as a small community fun run in 2015. It has grown into a massive 2-day event attracting close to 2000 participants, of whom over 40% are people with disabilities. The Gijima Foundation partners with government departments, traditional authority, private sector, local DPOs and civil society in hosting this annual event in rural Manguzi.
Vision
A fully inclusive and healthy South Africa where people with disabilities are empowered, active, visible and fully integrated into community life, healthcare systems, and physical activity opportunities.
Mission
To promote health, dignity and inclusion through accessible, community-driven sports, wellness and advocacy programmes—most notably the annual Manguzi Gijima event—and to champion the rights, participation and wellbeing of people with disabilities across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
Objectives
The Gijima Foundation aims to promote health, wellbeing and social development by delivering inclusive community sports and wellness events, particularly the annual Manguzi Gijima. It advocates for the rights and full participation of people with disabilities by creating platforms for engagement, raising awareness, and addressing barriers to inclusion. The organisation also strengthens partnerships and mobilises resources to support accessible programmes, while sharing its expertise to empower similar initiatives across South Africa.
